Unlike many left-wing politicians who claim to be "tolerant" but will jump at the first chance to verbally crucify someone who isn't lockstep with their ideology and continually show a frightening laxity when dealing with our rights, conservatives view our God-given liberties outlined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights as something never to be tampered with by bureaucrats but instead preserved with our blood if necessary to defend for the next generation. Therefore, we take a much stronger stance on protecting your rights to conduct yourself however you'd like, believe in whatever you want, and have a relationship with whomever you love. The difference between conservatives and progressives here is that we are big believers in an important word- accountability- and see people the likes of "Occupy Oakland" that throw bottles of urine at policemen, have campsites with drug laden needles scattered around, and have chronic episodes of rape/robbery/violence as not only overstepping their rights but compromising your basic rights to safety and freedom. Our objections to other issues including abortion and embryonic stem cell research come from our uncommon conviction to protect innocent human life regardless of its stage of development and dedication to protecting the 1st amendment rights of both individuals and groups (i.e. churches) from unfair discrimination by the gov't. The misguided depiction of conservatives seen in the description is simply a straw man fallacy in its purest form and shows the inability of many people on the left to discuss on a rational level the merits of each of our arguments. Bottom line: we are the true liberals...classical liberals. Before it got twisted, liberal meant one who sincerely believed in personal, economic, and political freedom from repression by gov'ts that refused to recognize the basic individual and collective rights of mankind.
