What is the theoretical cell potential assuming standard conditions?

Nickel and aluminum electrodes are used to build a galvanic cell. The standard reduction potential for the nickel(II) ion is -0.26 V and that of the aluminum(III) ion is -1.66 V.

The standard oxidation potential for Al (s) is + 1.66 V

The two half-reactions that occurs are

Ni2+ + 2e- %26gt;%26gt; Ni (s) E掳 = - 0.26

Al (s) %26gt;%26gt; Al3+ + 3e- E掳 = + 1.66

E掳 cell = - 0.26 + 1.66 = 1.40 V
